The Los Angeles Rams have been seeking a formidable rookie tight end prospect to add to the roster in each of the past three NFL drafts. But when the Rams finally selected Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson, the pick felt a bit anticlimactic. It's not that Ferguson is not a worthy tight end. He is. But after chasing down TE Dalton Kincaid and TE Brock Bowers without success, the front office seemed to settle for one of the few tight ends that the team had not met with before the draft.

Even more curious, Ferguson was the fourth tight end selected in the draft, but was considered the sixth-ranked rookie prospect available. And perhaps that is why the selection did not generate that initial 'wow' impact that I and many other Rams fans expected. But I do know that whenever the Rams select a rookie, it's not that instant reaction that tells the tale. It's how I feel as time wears on. And I can already say that after a good night's sleep, the Ferguson selection is growing on me.

Los Angeles Rams GM Les Snead is convinced that Terrance Ferguson is more than just a pass-catching tight end. And that testimony is enough to persuade me to pause, take a step back, and re-survey the landscape that led to Ferguson becoming the first rookie to be selected. And that answer was easy to find, as it came from Rams GM Les Snead himself:

"Someone who is just tenacious, plays urgent, and he is going to give more effort than the next guy."

It certainly helps that he has a Matthew Stafford fan in the family, so he is fully versed in terms of his starting quarterback, and patterned his football skillset to be a dependable and productive tight end should the opportunity arrive that he might catch Stafford passes.

Don't look now, but that opportunity is here.

It's always reassuring to witness GM Les Snead and HC Sean McVay enthusiastically thrilled over a selection. And the Rams hold six picks, which will quadruple their number of rookies in the Day 3 draft lightning round. Buckle up and stay tuned, as this is going to be a barnstormer.

As always, thanks for reading.
