When the Los Angeles Rams hired Ron Gould to take over in 2023, not everyone recognized the importance. To be fair, many fans were simply trying to figure out who the guy was. He is a running back aficionado, a guy who lives and breathes the position. But best of all, he is the guy who has unlocked the full potential of running back Kyren Williams.

It hasn't been an easy accomplishment. Gould is a running backs coach in an offense that leans heavily into the passing game. That means his players must know how to block, pick up blitzes, and protect the quarterback long before they get carries.

It also means that his players must not only know how to run but also how to catch passes as receivers.

His impact on the offense has been both dramatic and positive. His rushing offense has skyrocketed to seventh-best in the NFL in 2025. It finished 11th best in 2023, but dropped to 24th in 2024. The reason for the disappointing nadir in 2024 is simple. His preference for smaller, lighter running backs dictates the need to platoon players.

When the offense embraced that fact in 2025, the running game peaked at its strongest showing since 2018, when the offense was powered by running back Todd Gurley.

Ron Gould turned a struggling rushing offense around

In 2022, LA could only muster 1,661 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. That was alarming, as the team's entire offense started with establishing the run. The offense finished the season 27th in rushing, 27th in points scored, and dead last in yards per game.

It was a feature of the offense that seemed to wilt due to neglect. Head coach Sean McVay inherited elite running back Todd Gurley. After Gurley was released, the team struggled to achieve any success at running the football.

Ron Gould was hired not to coach running backs but to turn the entire ground game around. The results under his guidance have been outstanding. The reason was simple. He immediately held players accountableL

“My philosophy as a coach is to create an environment where each and every young man can optimize their potential in the classroom, in the community, and on the field. We achieve this together through trust, accountability, structure, discipline, and hard work." -Ron Gould, as per his UC Davis head coach profile.

Young running back Kyren Williams was his first protege. After a pedestrian rookie season of 35 carries for 139 yards, he erupted over the next three seasons. After four years in LA's backfield, Williams has generated 3,834 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns. Better still, he shows no signs of slowing down.

His teammate, running back Blake Corum, is in hot pursuit. In just two NFL seasons, Corum has rushed for 953 yards and six touchdowns. Under Gould, Williams and Corum are realistically poised to shatter 1000 rushing yards on the same offense, a feat that has not been accomplished since 2009.

Kyren Williams' production has skyrocketed since the team hired Ron Gould to coach running backs. Now the team boasts a bona fide 1-2 punch out of the backfield. And Gould is just getting started.

His immediate goal of establishing a dependable and productive running back has been met. His next task of establishing a complementary running back can be checked off the list as well. New offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase will likely have something to say about what comes next.

Similar to Rams long-time wide receiver coach Eric Yarber (who has been promoted to Senior offensive assistant/wide receivers), Gould is happy to remain focused on coaching running backs. Fans should be grateful, as this team's offense have rebounded dramatically.

Is seems that Ron Gould knows the secret to unlocking Kyren Williams' full NFL potential. And by all indications, he is about to perform the same magic on Blake Corum in 2026 as well.

As always, thanks for reading.
