The Los Angeles Rams went from one of the Super Bowl LXI favorites to the outright leader in the clubhouse last week by trading for Cleveland Browns superstar pass rusher Myles Garrett. In exchange, they surrendered a hefty package consisting of three NFL Draft picks (including one first-round pick) along with a quality young edge rusher in Jared Verse.

The latest rumor dump from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler revealed just how long the trade process took and how much convincing the Rams needed before getting this deal done. According to Fowler, even though the Rams grew warmer to the idea of trading Verse in a Garrett deal around the middle of May, they weren't thrilled about it.

Fowler said that not only did it take months for the Rams to throw Verse into trade talks, but they were reportedly so unwilling to let him go that they kept sending the Browns trade proposals that did not include No. 8, replacing him instead with sweetened draft packages.

Rams were very nervous about parting ways with Verse

Trading Verse was a necessary move to land a player of Garrett's caliber. The former Horn's pressure numbers are up there with some of the best in the NFC, and he should be a great addition in Cleveland. If the Rams didn't include him, the chance to land a future Hall of Famer like Garrett would have gone by the wayside.

The Rams have now traded every single first-rounder or player they picked with one of those choices since they moved to Los Angeles. Verse was traded away for Garrett. Jared Goff, the No. 1 pick in 2016, was shipped out for Matthew Stafford. Players like Jalen Ramsey and Brandin Cooks cost LA the rest of their premium draft capital. A ring in 2021 made it all worth it.

Garrett joins a loaded defensive line that features Verse's college teammate in the ascending Braden Fiske, the eternally underrated Poona Foord, and the tremendous Kobie Turner. Here's a terrifying thought for opposing quarterbacks: Garrett may be in more advantageous pass-rush positions this season, as the Rams will probably be leading more often than his old Browns teams.

Verse should be great for the next decade in Cleveland, but the Rams are doing whatever they can to ensure that the Stafford-Sean McVay partnership gets one more championship out of it. Painful as it is, that includes trading some of their best assets.
