The time for the Los Angeles Rams to extend elite wide receiver Puka Nacua will arrive. But now is not the time. Nacua is battling addiction, and it's a battle for his future. And so, the mission is not to make Nacua rich. Rather, it's to make the team's star player healthy.

That point was reiterated by general manager Les Snead. In a recent interview at the NFL Owners meetings, Fox NFL reporter Eric Williams sat down with Snead to discuss how Nacua's current events impact his extension talks with the team:

"You need to be on your P’s and Q’s in both categories to earn that type of contract. Right now we’re focused on the human being, and then we’ll get to that stuff."
Les Snead re: Puka Nacua

Snead was not unkind in his statement. He was both compassionate and honest. Right now, that is exactly what the team's young star needs to hear. To travel from where he is to where he wants to be, Nacua needs to get honest assessments from the people in his life.

And quite honestly, an extension should be the last thing Puka Nacua is focusing on.

LA Rams may need to modify their offseason strategy

Perhaps the LA Rams work their star receiver too hard. He was targeted nearly 29 percent of the time in the passing game. He made over 33 percent of the receptions. And he put up over 36 percent of the team's receiving yards. He scored 10 of the team's 46 receiving touchdowns, had the longest reception at 58 yards, and put up the most explosive plays at 27.

Puka Nacua was a one-man gang in this offense.

But the pressure is wearing him out. He put up more than twice as many receptions as veteran Davante Adams, the second-best receiver in this offense. And he was targeted by some of the most physical defensive backs in the NFL. He was literally knocked out of the season opener against the Houston Texans, but returned after being stitched up in the locker room.

Puka Nacua works hard for this team.

It's a matter of maturity. LA has benefitted from Nacua's devil-may-care attitude, but now he needs help. Either the team adds a workhorse receiver who can make the tough catches in traffic, or a polished route runner with speed who can test the secondaries deep. That should be a top priority for the draft.

This team left running back Kyren Williams on an island in 2024, expecting him to handle it all. But when the load was shared with backup running back Blake Corum, Williams himself was more effective. The team needs to repeat that philosophy for their star receiver.

A wide receiver should be added with one of LA's first three picks in the draft. That changes the scope for the draft, as the team had made it a point to avoid needs before this. Will Snead be able to deliver for his team?

You bet he will. As always, thanks for reading.
