Does the offense have enough firepower? Is starting quarterback Matthew Stafford going to find his mojo once more and lead this team to an incredible season? Have the veteran players on this offense rediscovered their fountain of youth? Or do the Los Angeles Rams need the unbridled youthful energy and passion of rookie reinforcements to find continued success this season?

When it comes to Los Angeles Rams rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson, fans are eager to see what he can do to help out this offense. Not just out of curiosity, but out of real interest in whether the offseason hype is justified. Can this unit get a boost from Ferguson’s presence on the field? The wait may already be over, as both Davis Allen and Colby Parkinson came away from Week 1 banged up.

The team is carrying four tight ends on the roster. Unlike a similar setup in 2024, the offense has already shown a willingness to run two-tight-end formations at an unprecedented rate. But with two of the three veteran tight ends emerging from the opener nursing injuries, it only makes sense for the Rams to consider deploying their lone healthy option in Week 2.

Rams rookie’s debut looks inevitable after Coach McVay’s latest comments

The biggest question about Ferguson’s role heading into the matchup with the Tennessee Titans is whether or not he fits into Sean McVay’s plans. While fans have learned not to take every comment from the coach at face value, this week is shaping up to significantly increase the rookie’s chances of seeing the field. And the clearest sign came when Coach McVay directly acknowledged that possibility in his recent remarks.

This offense favors veteran experience over rookie potential. But sometimes, injuries leave no other choice. Even if Ferguson sees action against the Titans defense, he’ll almost certainly be the second tight end on the field. That gives the Rams the option to use him as a decoy while targeting Tyler Higbee or Allen instead.

The Rams are also entering Week 2 with injuries to Rob Havenstein (ankle), Kevin Dotson (ankle), and Steve Avila (ankle). It appears Avila will be a no-go, which opens the door for interior lineman Beaux Limmer to get his first start of the season. With the offensive line less than 100 percent, it’s logical that two-tight-end sets could help bolster blocking support.

Still, expectations should be kept in check. Even if Ferguson suits up, his debut likely won’t feature more than a couple of targets. The Rams may just want to see how defenses react to him and how he handles those matchups. But even if it’s just a small step, it’s a step forward.

As always, thanks for reading.
