Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford didn't have a fairytale ending to his 16th season in the NFL. On a very snowy night against the Philadelphia Eagles, a late rally fell just short as Sean McVay's crew were knocked out of the postseason by a 28-22 scoreline.
Stafford has shown that he is still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, even as he approaches his 37th birthday in a few weeks, during the team's late charge to the playoffs. Still, both Stafford and the Rams are likely well aware of the fact that Father Time is watching over him.
The Super Bowl champion QB, who threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns despite adverse weather conditions against arguably the best roster in the league, was asked about his desire to keep grinding away with the Rams after this year. His response was somewhat encouraging.
Stafford said that he will need to "take some time to think about" his future, but he also remarked that the Rams are playing good football lately. The former Lions great also believes that he has a good bit of gas left in the tank, which should keep fans excited for what he has in store in 2025.
Matthew Stafford addresses his Rams future after brutal playoff loss
Stafford threw for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions this season. Despite Cooper Kupp's sharp decline, Stafford and Puka Nacua have been good enough on their lonesome to keep the LA passing game respected by foes entering the postseason.
Stafford already has his Super Bowl, 16 years worth of high-end quarterback money, and 377 passing touchdowns to his name. Playing in 2025 would easily take him over 60,000 passing yards for his career, though such an achievement may not be at the front of his mind.
For the Rams, it seems highly unlikely that Jimmy Garoppolo will be an acceptable replacement for Stafford under center if he does hang it up. They may need to pivot hard in free agency, especially after their NFL Draft position in the mid-20s will likely deprive them of their next franchise great.
While fans will likely be waiting with bated breath until Stafford sends out some sort of official confirmation that he will be back, the fact that he sounds like someone who believes in this roster makes it sound like fans should expect more of No. 9 under center in 2025.
