Where veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford goes, so go the Los Angeles Rams. Right now, Stafford is playing at an elite level, one not witnessed since he arrived on the team in 2021. After eight games, he has completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 2,147 yards, 21 touchdowns, and two interceptions. He has thrown for five and four touchdowns in his past two games, respectively.

He has not thrown an interception since Week 3, a September 21st road game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Too good to be true? Perhaps not. To ensure that he is protected, the offense has launched a new wrinkle, 13-personnel packages that have been devastatingly effective.

He even set an NFL International record for throwing touchdown passes in England in Week 7.

Is this simply the last flash of the 37-year-old quarterback's career before he retires? Or is this something more? Perhaps this is the passion of competing in a sport that feels fun again because he sees retirement as inevitable? Whatever the cause, Stafford is playing lights out, and Los Angeles is almost firing on all cylinders right now as a result.

Matthew Stafford is drawing plenty of NFL MVP buzz right now

Stafford is rightfully getting mentioned in the NFL MVP discussion right now. From former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick to NFL insider Dan Orlovsky to NFL insider Pete Prisco to former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, and more, the comments are the same.

The former Georgia Bulldog is playing at an NFL Most Valuable Player level right now.

His performance is not just about putting up great optics. His performance in the first eight games of 2025 places him in the company of Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Patrick Mahomes with 20+ passing touchdowns and two or fewer interceptions.

He is an ideal quarterback for head coach Sean McVay's offense. McVay designs plays that give quarterbacks many options. Stafford drives with all the gears and pedals like a race car driver. But when things go south, he can improvise to make something out of nothing.

Despite the on-field heroics, Stafford has an uphill climb for postseason accolades. West Coast NFL teams and players are not as visible, and so they must overcome the bias of unfamiliarity. Beyond that, Stafford is 37 years old, and most articles and feature stories tend to headline with rookies and younger quarterbacks.

Worst of all, it's only nine weeks into an 18-week NFL season. At his age, he has to endure the grueling physical demands of another NFL season. Still, if anyone can do it, Stafford can. That's why he's back. And fans are loving every second of it.

As always, thanks for reading.
