The Los Angeles Rams shook up the NFL world on Monday by trading for star Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett. While the trade will cost them a talented young defender in Jared Verse, plus multiple draft picks, Garrett is the kind of defender who could help the Rams win another Super Bowl. He’s also the kind of player who could help lure Aaron Donald out of retirement.
Last offseason, when the Dallas Cowboys were preparing to trade Micah Parsons, Donald reacted to a social media image of Parsons in a Rams uniform. The recently retired defender commented that if Parsons ended up in Los Angeles, he would consider coming out of retirement because of how dominant the defensive line would be.
Parsons was ultimately traded to the Green Bay Packers, and Donald stayed retired. A year later, however, the Rams have landed an even better edge defender. It's worth asking if Donald could put his cleats back on to join him.
Myles Garrett could tempt Aaron Donald to return to Rams
Donald last played in 2023, still performing at an elite level and making his 10th straight Pro Bowl. However, having accomplished everything, including a Super Bowl victory following the 2021 season, the future Hall of Famer walked away from millions with plenty of good football left in him.
He could now be tempted to share some of what he has left. Donald has long respected Garrett, and just recently expressed how much he wants to see the seven-time All-Pro experience team success. That hasn't been the case in Cleveland, where Garrett has appeared in only three playoff games. What a waste.
Speaking on The Arena back in February, after Garrett was named Defensive Player of the Year, Donald raved about the 31-year-old superstar and wished that he could enjoy a Super Bowl run of his own.
Well, Garrett will have the chance to do that with the Rams, with or without Donald, but the latter returning would certainly give Los Angeles a better chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy again. The Rams still have contract rights to Donald, and the retired defensive tackle’s online workouts made it clear that he’s not far from football shape.
With all of that in mind, no one can blame Rams fans if they are already dreaming about the most dominant defensive line ever. Garrett and Byron Young off the edge, Kobie Turner and Donald inside. Let's stop. Just thinking about it is too tempting already.
