NFL expert claims LA Rams not out of the NFL Trade market just yet
By Bret Stuter
While the LA Rams are unlikely to have any interest in trading away veteran WR Cooper Kupp, QB Matthew Stafford, or any number of names cited in NFL rumors or trade speculation in recent weeks, let's not shut down any likelihood of Rams GM Les Snead remaining active before the 2024 NFL Trade Deadline. There is always the chance, however remote, that the team will be net buyers at the deadline. After all, this team still needs some help at underperforming positions.
On the other hand, the team invested heavily into veteran free agents in the offseason. Those veteran players, through underperformance, injury, or simply surprising performances from rookies, are superfluous. And the best option at the trade deadline is not only to reinforce the roster where thin, but to shed excess in terms of duplicate talents or overly investing limited salary cap dollars.
One such player whose name has come up before in trade speculation is that of veteran DB Tre'Davious White. White has been a healthy scratch for several games, and that is unlikely to change this season.
It's that poor performance / lack of fit to the Rams secondary scheme that puts White into the surplus category. As such, ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler reports that the LA Rams are discussing options for his future, including a potential trade.
If the report is to be taken literally, at least one NFL team has shown interest in adding White to their roster before the 2024 NFL Trade Deadline. And if past history is any indication of what fans can expect, the return for parting ways with Tre White is likely no better than a late Day 3 draft pick, and may come as far into the future as 2027.
The motivation for the Rams to make such a trade is as much of a salary dump as anything. While the team signed White to a one-year deal, he is taking up a roster spot and salary that could be better spent elsewhere.
While still injured, I'm not convinced that the team would not listen to offers for veteran IOL Jonah Jackson as well. He has done nothing yet to shake his injury-prone reputation prior to signing with the Rams. In fact, he has suffered two separate injuries, and has appeared in two of seven games, playing just 130 offensive snaps for the Rams so far.
While unlikely to be traded while injured, he is expected to return in time to compete this season. But will the team need him? In his absence, the team has settled on rookies Justin Dedich and Beaus Limmer. While there is certainly a debate to be had over whether Jackson is better than either, they are dependable (and very inexpensive) rookies who are rapidly improving, and the team also has the benefit of IOL Steve Avila coming back at some time as well.
And there is always the chance for some team taking a flyer on backup IOL Logan Bruss for a late draft pick. After all, he could find that a change of scenery would renew his NFL career.
As always, thanks for reading.
