When it comes to the Los Angeles Rams and roster tweaks, fans have every right to be surprised right now. Discovering that the team is making roster adjustments in Week 11 is a bit unusual. But this is the way general manager Les Snead gets things done.
It was inevitable. As soon as Week 10 ended with such a lopsided score, the next move by general manager Les Snead was predetermined by any number of cliches. The writing was on the wall, the next shoe dropped, etc. What it came down to is that the team got the desired results from long snapper Jake McQuaide and placekicker Harrison Mevis.
That necessitated the release of Alex Ward to make room for McQuaide. The next move awaits the resolution of the kicker issue. Right now, the recently signed UFL star kicker Mevis has proven to be reliable enough to warrant another shot at kicking, this time against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11.
Rams special teams are not out of the woods just yet
Changes have been made to the kicking group.
But the entire special teams unit is not out of the woods just yet. The answer to resolve one of the NFL's worst field goal units this season cannot be to avoid kicking field goals. As fun as it was to simply sit back and enjoy an offense putting up six touchdowns, that was icing on the cake in Week 10.
Touchdowns will be harder to come by in Week 11.
As much as fans would love to wave the green flag to indicate that the problem is fixed, that has yet to happen. Mevis booted six of six extra points. So, nobody witnessed whether the field goal kicking improved.
Even now, the team is sending two distinct and different messages to the special teams units. Long snapper Alex Ward failed to live up to expectations and has been released. But the field goal kicking unit and the placekicker role are still under the umbrella of uncertainty.
When will the team release Joshua Karty? Don't expect a sudden release. Until the "Thiccer kicker" proves he can boot field goals consistently, Snead is unlikely to release Karty. And there is the imminent return of cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon from IR, which could be anytime after Week 12.
And so, fans are likely to be on the edge of their seats for a little longer. As long as the offense scores touchdowns and the wins keep stacking up, everything is fine. But if the game is on the line with a field goal attempt as time runs out, it will be another stressful event.
The two losses so far can be directly related to faulty field goal kicking. Until the team proves it has fixed that aspect, everything continues to be up in the air.
As always, thanks for reading.
