2nd secondary injury in second day of Rams Training Camp is an alarming trend
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams seemed to be deep everywhere. A roster that not only brought back many of the starters from 2023, but a young roster that added 15 rookies to the team's 53-man active roster last season. And 26 new rookies hope to stick with the team this season. While it is a mathematical impossibility for all rookies to earn a roster spot, the chances of one more rookie making it to the team's initial 53-man roster are increasing.
At least for a rookie cornerback.
Veteran defensive back Derion Kendrick was feared to have torn his ACL on Day 1 of training camp. LA Rams HC Sean McVay confirmed those fears:
While some had and will argue that Kendrick was unlikely to be a starting in 2024, he remains a viable defensive back with experience. While the front office certainly reinforced the secondary, the safety position seemed to be the position that had far more depth. Yes, the team did sign veteran defensive backs Darious Williams and Tre'Davious White. But the team lost starting CB Ahkello Witherspoon, while Tre'Davious White is returning from a series of major injuries.
And now, Darious Williams has already been shaken up in just the second day of training camp.
While there are no updates yet as to Williams status, the trend is undeniable. The Rams secondary has already suffered one season-ending injury, and the team's top cornerback just pulled up limping. This has been without pads going on, without full speed, and not even out of the month of July. That's an alarming trend.
Thankfully, the team has some options in the free agency market who can come in and compete instantly. While not all options are Day 1 starters, they offer a range of contributors for various costs. And now that Kendrick's season is over, the team may be working the phones to add another cornerback.
If Williams is hurt or hampered in any way, the front office will need to act quickly. The Rams cannot bank on a newly formed secondary forming instant chemistry. And with the team facing some of the top NFL offenses right out of the gate, this secondary cannot have any question marks or doubts.
We expected the front office to tweak the Rams roster early in training camp, and this outbreak of injuries to cornerbacks could be the incentive to do so. Of course, the team will vet any player who they intend to sign. But with two cornerbacks suffering early injuries, the ball is in GM Les Snead's court. Stay tuned as this could be a rapidly developing storyline.
And as always, thanks for reading.
