The LA Rams coaching staff have just begun OTAs, but the process of discerning players who will not make the 53-man roster, nor the practice squad, has already begun. That means up to 37 players will be informed in a matter of months that their services are no longer required. Such is the nature of competing in professional sports for a spot on the team.

One of the most challenging aspects for a newly arrived young player who is competing for a roster spot on an NFL team this time of year. It's about first impressions, grand first impressions, a quality that not everyone can or has mastered. But some do, and we have already taken the time to note the eight young players on the Rams roster who are already turning heads. But for everyone who turns heads, some do not.

That is not to say that time is already up. OTAs have just begun. And that means that there is still plenty of time to show up, practice hard, show undeniable progress, and earn a chance to make this roster. This team, like all NFL teams, wants to emerge from summer training sessions with the most competitive array of players possible.

Still, that can only happen with limited time and activities. OTAs, training camp, and even preseason games are not a perfect system to isolate and identify the best possible roster configuration. But it's pretty close. After all, paring down a team from 90 to 53 players may not be a simple matter, but coaches undergo this exercise every year. Like learning to eat with chopsticks for the first time, after a while you can get pretty good at it.
