My gut feeling heading into Week 9 is not very optimistic, and that is surprising even to myself. The LA Rams are 3-5, and while their prospects for a rare win at Lambeau field in Week 9 as the Rams take on the similarly struggling Green Bay Packers are not optimal, the Rams do have a BYE week afterwards.

We talked at length about issues that the current injury to Matthew Stafford causes the LA Rams roster, But there is a least one positive note out of it all. Reserve quarterback Dresser Winn did indeed pass his physical and has been signed to the LA Rams practice squad.

So far, not much 'news' to any of that, right?

Well, I do feel good about the LA Rams getting Dresser Winn signed to the practice squad, for several reasons.

Dresser Winn is a perfect practice squad signing

While the LA Rams did draft former Georgia QB Steton Bennett in Round 4 of the 2023 NFL Draft, he was not the only quarterback added in the 2023 offseason. The Rams front office also signed an undrafted rookie quarterback out of Tennessee-Martin, a young quarterback named Dresser Winn.

Dresser Winn stands 6-foot-2, weighs 215 pounds, and is a bona fide pocket passer. He was considered by some 2023 NFL Draft analysts and scouts to be a draft sleeper, a quarterback who needed just a bit of refinement to complement his arsenal of throws that are ideally suited for the NFL,

Winn is not an NFL starting quarterback yet. But he could be next year. Whether that opportunity will come with the LA Rams then or with another NFL team is too difficult to determine just yet. Dresser Winn is exactly the type of young quarterback that the Rams need to invest in now. Our introductory article about Winn highlighted the fact that he would need a year on the Rams practice squad.

Sometimes, moves that impact the Rams roster are for the here and now. But this signing has far more value in a strategic sense. With Winn on the practice squad, the Rams coaching staff can resume working with him, coaching him up, and giving him the opportunity to continue to develop into an NFL quarterback.

If you don't see that just yet, that's okay. I've already admitted that my optimism is waning heading into Week 9. But I'm not a pessimist just yet. I like Winn on the Rams practice squad. It may not be a huge victory, but at 6-foot-2, it's a big Winn.
