The life of an NFL football player is not nearly as easy as you may think. For example, imagine yourself heading off to sleep believing that you would get a large dose of offensive snaps for the LA Rams in their Week 2 matchup against the rival San Francisco 49ers. And then, when you wake up, you discover that you are inactive for the game, and even worse, are rumored to be on the trade block once again.

That appears to be how LA Rams running back Cam Akers' day is going so far. At least, that is a safe conclusion from his social media account in the face of a wildfire of NFL rumors about his status, his future, and his trade availability with the LA Rams on game day.

If this is true, then we can rule out the following:

Scenarios that are not supported by the facts

I: Minor injury - One of the reasons to place a player on the inactive list is a minor injury that did not cross the threshold of reporting, but which did not subside or became progressively worse. If Cak Akers is confused, than that is not a likely scenario.

II: Play me or trade me demands - While this is getting a lot of believes in the jury of public opinion, the facts as we know them does not support this conclusion. In 2022, the sudden benching of Cam Akers was not denied. And at the time, there was a lot of frustration on the Rams roster over the team's lack of success. After a stunning Week 1 win, that frustration factor is not nearly as high with this team.

III: Power play by Cam Akers agent - If the LA Rams and Cam Akers' agent were in extension talks, this might have been a strategy to force the Rams front office to negotiate in good faith. But that strategy would have been thoroughly communicated to Akers, and would have needed his approval. That does not appear to be the case.

What do the latest Rams rumors over Cam Akers mean?

  1. Which means that . . .
  2. III: Strongly considering releasing the player
  3. II: Trade talks warrant sitting the player
  4. I: Wakeup call to perform better
