LA Rams reunite with 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey's best friend
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams roster is depleted. That's right, after just one week into the 2024 NFL season, the team has suffered an incredible number of injuries to the offensive line and to the secondary. While I have articles about the offensive line, injuries, and free agency signings to restock the group, this bit of news jumps to the front of the queue, if for no other reason than the complete logic and fit that the move
It's not often that the Rams follow our advice. But when the team assigned starting DB Darious Williams to IR, we quickly named three options for the team. The team needed options from a range of contract costs and football field production. And yes, former veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon was among the three options.
Well, now it's more than an option. It's the reality. After a solid 2023 NFL season, the Rams are finally re-signing Ahkello Witherspoon to the roster. In my opinion, not a moment too soon, either:
While I won't argue that Ahkello Witherspoon dominated in 2023, I will vehemently argue that he gave the team a huge level of production for a low-cost contract. He was phenomenal in terms of cost value. He had three interceptions in 2023. And last season he allowed just 51 of 106 passes targeting his receivers (48.1 percent completion rate).
While he was hampered with nagging injuries as the season wound down, he was definitely worth the cost and his production was far better than expected. Perhaps something that was not noted very often is the fact that Ahkello Witherspoon brought a huge competitive spirit to the Rams' secondary.
Just check out this post-game press conference with San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey as he addresses the conversation that he had with Ahkello Witherspoon after the play:
The LA Rams roster may be a bit depleted and worrisome right now. But keep in mind that almost all injuries are temporary, and the team should get a strong surge of starters back in a month or so.
In the meantime, no NFL general manager is better at crisis management than Les Snead. He wastes no time in adding key contributors.
I love this signing. Witherspoon is a defensive back who is capable of starting as well as filling in a rotational role. I'm not sure I understand why it took the team so long to re-sign him, but I'm quite thrilled that he is back. The Rams secondary is not only restocked, but when Darious Williams returns from IR, this could be one of the stingiest secondaries in the NFL.
As always, thanks for reading.
