It's hard to imagine that there are any remaining records left to set and or break for the career of LA Rams starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. But as the 16-season NFL veteran prepares to 5compete in his 16th NFL season, the reality is that almost every game could be a record-setting performance.
Yes, we had covered this topic briefly recently, but that article was a Rams-centric piece that highlighted what Matthew Stafford might accomplish in terms of team records. But this time, we have a bit of a twist to share. and these are those records that you can use to shock and amaze your friends with during the game, if you are into that sort of thing. (Come on, who doesn't love to spout NFL records during a game to amaze your friends?)
Per NFL Communications, LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has several records that he can impact in the 2024 season opener against his former team, the Detroit Lions. Let's break them down, shall we?
If Matthew Stafford throws for just 95+ passing yards against the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football (5:20 pm PT, NBC), Stafford will take over now-retired quarterback Matt Ryan at fourth place for most passing yards in season-opening games. The current top five quarterbacks in this category are:
- Drew Brees - 5,566 passing yards
- Tom Brady - 5,523 passing yards
- Peyton Manning - 4,736 passing yards
- Matt Ryan - 4,486 passing yards
- Matthew Stafford - 4,392 passing yards
While he remains a bit out of reach of the top spot held by QB Drew Brees, Stafford is the only active quarterback on the list. If Matthew Stafford exceeds 345 passing yards in Week 1, he could leapfrog both Matt Ryan and Peyton Manning into third place.
While we are discussing 300+ passing yards in the season opener, if Matthew Stafford passes for 300 or more yards against the Detroit Lions, he will move into second place for the most 300+ passing yard games in season openers. The current top three in that category are as follows:
- Drew Brees - 10 Week 1 games with 300+ passing yards
- (TIE) Matt Ryan - 8 Week 1 games with 300+ passing yards
- (TIE) Matthew Stafford - 8 Week 1 games with 300+ passing yards.
Now the question is: How good does Matthew Stafford feel entering Week 1 against his former team once more?
It's safe to say that he feels pretty good, particularly with the fact that both WRs Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp are set to go right out of the gate in 2024. The team rallied around Stafford in the second half of the 2023 season to finish at 7-1.
In 2024, the LA Rams are looking for that momentum to carry over into this season. And what better stage to assert himself in the NFL record books than to show up in a big way. The team understands that success hinges on Stafford showing up and even showing off a bit.
I believe that he will have a great game in Week 1.
As always, thanks for reading.
