Rams linked to trade for former first round pick to backup Matthew Stafford

I mean, I guess?

Given that Week 3 isn't even over yet, it's not quite time for NFL Trade Rumor SZN. But when has that stopped anyone ever? Time waits for no trade rumors, and if you're not already thinking of midseason additions that could help get your team over the top, you're being negligent. In the NFL, when you're on time, you're late.

ESPN knows this, which is why they've already gotten out ahead of everyone with a big list of trade candidates and the places they could head off to before the November 5th trade deadline. And what better to complete a way-too-early trade deadline discussion with an idea that doesn't really make sense for any of the sides involved? They simply couldn't help themselves and sent another failed NFL starter to Sean McVay in hopes that things would go differently this time. The good news is that it's not Carson Wentz.

Could Sean McVay be the guy to finally salvage Zach Wilson's NFL career?

"Potential landing spot: Los Angeles Rams. With Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett behind Stafford on the depth chart, the Rams lack a high-ceiling developmental quarterback. You can question whether Wilson is that, but if coach Sean McVay were to think he could work with Wilson's game, who knows? The Dolphins, Steelers, Panthers and Titans could be other potential landing spots."

Zach Wilson finished preseason third on a depth chart with Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham, so I'm not entirely sure what there is to salvage at this point, but it's a fun idea for anyone's Madden franchise. If you watch that one (1) single combine throw enough times, you can sort of see the vision. It's not a good vision, or even a vision that makes sense, but you can see it. Can Wilson even be considered a "high-ceiling" quarterback anymore?

I'm not sure why the Rams would trade for a QB when, like the article literally points out in the first sentence, they literally already have two on the roster. Trading a late round pick for a guy that is definitely not good when you can just use that late round pick for a guy that still actually has upside doesn't make sense to me, but I'm not an NFL GM. Probably smart to just let Wilson be the Dolphins' problem and hope that Stafford's arm hangs on long enough to tread water until literally every other starter on the team gets off IR.
