Rams must act quickly in the secondary if they hope to save their season

The Los Angeles Rams are on the cusp of saving their season, but they must make a cornerback change if they truly want to do it. The Rams signed CB Tre'Davious White in free agency, and through three games, White has played 97% of the Rams' snaps on defense, but that isn't a good thing. Let's be honest here; White has been downright awful in 2024 and is probably a player who is well beyond his best days in the NFL.

He's allowed 10 completions on 15 attempts for 165 yards and four touchdowns. He's given up a career-high 16.5 yards per completion and has already surrendered four touchdowns in coverage, which is a career-high for him. The most damning stat here is that he's allowing an opposing passer rating of 143.1.

Quarterbacks have been nearly-perfect when targeting Tre White, and this is just not a player that should be seeing the field anymore. He's also got a 26.7% missed tackle percentage, which is also a career-high mark for him.

The Rams' idea to sign Tre White was not a bad one, as they desperately needed help in the secondary, but White is quickly proving to be the wrong move. Darious Williams is on injured reserve, so if the Rams desire to save their season, they have to at least make an attempt at making a chance. Their best course of action may be to hit the free agent market once again in the secondary.

Their first move before hitting the free agent market could be to simply elevate and play Ahkello Witherspoon, who started all 17 games for the Rams in the 2023 NFL Season and allowed an opposing passer rating of 75.7, which is stellar, but could the Rams also try the free agent market?

The most notable name at CB on the free agent market is Xavien Howard. He allowed an opposing passer rating of 81.3 in 2023, so that could be an upgrade over White. Patrick Peterson is still on the market, and while his best days are behind him, he allowed a 91.5 passer rating in 2023 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, so he was not terrible.

My point here is that the LA Rams have a great chance in front of them to save their season, and as they get healthier, they'll get better. Tre'Davious White is simply unplayable at this point, so the Rams should seek to try and upgrade. Les Snead has never shied away from making in-season moves, and with how active he was this past offseason, I reckon that he'd have no issue dipping into the FA market once again.

The Los Angeles Rams cannot keep playing veteran DB Tre White as a starter in the 2024 NFL Season. They must make a change.
