It's officially last call for Random Summer Football Content, which means everyone's scrambling to get their last Weird Posts in before actual football starts.
And truthfully, we'll miss this Bleacher Report content when it's gone. No one else had the courage to take the most random ideas possible and earnestly try and will them into existence. So instead of rolling our eyes (you still can a little tho) let's just enjoy one of the last great random Rams predictions of the year, courtesy of our fearless friends at Bleacher Report.
BR thinks the Rams will (re) sign Ahkello Witherspoon right at the buzzer
"Los Angeles' cornerback depth is being tested, as Derion Kendrick is out for the year with a torn ACL, and Darious Williams has been dealing with a hamstring injury. Rams coach Sean McVay has not ruled out bringing back Witherspoon as insurance ... Witherspoon could aid most teams in need of cornerback help, and a return to San Francisco would also make sense—the 49ers are, after all, chasing a Super Bowl. However, L.A. is probably the cornerback's most sensible destination at this point in August."
I'm not entirely I'd sure that I'd say depth is being tested just because one guy is out for the year, but I understand the gist of what they're getting at. They also just released Jerry Jacobs – a guy they signed to help deal with Williams' injury – which indicates that they're not overly worried about the position long term.
As a depth option, though, B/R's not wrong. His stats from last season were so-so: he was good against the run (71.6 PFF grade & a career-high 46 tackles) but was below average in coverage – the 14.9 yards per reception he allowed was a career-worst, and there was a noticeable increase in how often teams targeted him on passing downs.
Maybe the Rams will buy into the idea that it's hard to predict future performance for replacement-level cornerbacks and convince themselves that Witherspoon is a guy worth taking another shot on. And in late August, beggars can't be choosers.
