Sean McVay brought the bad news with latest Puka Nacua update
By Ryan Heckman
During Sunday night's eventual loss to the Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua gave fans a scare when he exited the game in the first half.
Nacua hobbled to the sideline after getting hit following a catch and went right into the blue medical tent. Roughly 15 minutes later, Nacua returned to the sideline in his full gear, leading fans to believe he may be coming back at some point during the game.
After the halftime break, though, it was announced that Nacua would be out for the remainder of the game.
And then, things got worse once all of the tests were ran early this week. Nacua was diagnosed with a PCL sprain in the same knee that caused him to miss a few weeks of practice during training camp.
“He’s got a Grade 2 PCL sprain. It’s the knee, it’s the same injury, it’s just a little bit more significant," the head coach said Wednesday.
Just how bad is the injury? McVay didn't seem to know, exactly. But, he did hint that Nacua could be on injured reserve for more than the minimum four games.
McVay truly didn't know when his star receiver would be back.
"He’s going to be back at some point, though. So that’s a positive. When that is, at what point, I don’t know," he said.
With Puka Nacua hurt, the Tyler Johnson breakout might finally happen
Back in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted current Rams wideout Tyler Johnson out of Minnesota in the fifth round. He and former Gopher Rashod Bateman gave Minnesota a talented duo which many projected to go on and do big things in the league.
Now playing for his third team in five seasons, Johnson looks like he could have a huge role going forward. After Nacua's exit Sunday night, it was Johnson who picked up the slack as the secondary option next to Cooper Kupp. The former Gopher ended his night with a career-high 79 receiving yards on five receptions and seven total targets.
While it's feasible that rookie Jordan Whittington also gets some action, along with Tutu Atwell and Demarcus Robinson, it looked like Johnson was the most involved Sunday night.
And, Johnson looked excellent.
Hopefully, Nacua isn't out for too long. But, under the leadership of McVay and within this offense, the Rams should be able to survive. There is enough talent there for Matthew Stafford to work with, especially considering the depth in the back field as well.
