The Los Angeles Rams have officially committed to Stetson Bennett as their backup quarterback while Jimmy Garoppolo serves his two-game suspension. Garoppolo was suspended for the first two games of the regular season due to "violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances."
Bennett didn't exactly play well during his two preseason appearances, throwing five interceptions to just two touchdowns. However, he still did enough to win the job, and the Rams started Dresser Winn in the preseason finale to ensure that Bennett didn't get nicked up before the regular season.
On Sunday, the Rams waived Winn, officially making way for the former Georgia Bulldog to back up Matthew Stafford, another former Georgia Bulldog, for the first two games of the regular season.
Stetson Bennett will serve a very important role in Rams' first two games
The Rams selected Bennett in the fourth round of last year's draft and he ended up not playing at all due to mental health issues. The Rams signed Garoppolo as a backup option during the offseason, a solid move for them considering some of their backup woes in recent years, but the suspension put them in a position where they had to have another backup quarterback option while Garoppolo sat out.
The hope is that we don't see Bennett on the field unless the Rams are blowing out the opposition because otherwise, it'd mean that Stafford got hurt. Bennett sitting behind Stafford isn't the best feeling for Rams fans but it's only for two games and the team didn't have a better option on the roster.
Yes, they could have signed someone like Ryan Tannehill or Blaine Gabbert but that didn't seem worth the hassle for two games. Garoppolo will be back for Week 3 against the 49ers. The two games he won't be patrolling the sidelines will be the season opener against the Lions and Week 2 versus the Cardinals.
Bennett was a star during his college days but Rams fans haven't gotten to see enough from him yet to be confident if he needs to step in and take snaps. Let's hope we don't have to see him out there but if he does, maybe we'll see some of the magic that helped him win two titles at Georgia.
