The LA Rams have 2 games to prove that they can win on the road
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams appear to be a solid playoff team as long as the team remains home in SoFi Stadium. Of course, with a record of 8-7, things are subject to rapid changes. Still, the Rams have been rather successful this season, save for one area. The LA Rams are just 3-4 whenever this team must play on the road. and the Rams path in the postseason will be all road games unfortunately.
It's not as though the LA Rams cannot win on the road. The Rams opened the 2023 NFL season with a convincing win over the Seattle Seahawks (8-7), a team that remains solidly in pursuit of a berth in the NFL Playoffs. The Rams also defeated the Indianapolis Colts (8-7), a team that is actively pursuing postseason competition as well. But success for the Rams on the road has been few and far between.
Four of the five Rams victories after the BYE have come at SoFi Stadium, their home field The only victory that has come for the Rams since the BYE has been a win against the Arizona Cardinals. The only other road game so far was the heartbreaking loss on the road against the Baltimore Ravens on the road. And that loss went into overtime.
LA Rams need to travel well to win playoff games
The San Francisco 49ers (11-4) have locked up the NFC West Division Title for 2023. That means that the Rams will be playing all of their games on the road in postseason competition. The trouble is that the Rams will end the season with two consecutive road games.
Travel is especially difficult for a young NFL roster.
Curiously, only the best NFL teams this year have had success on the road. Teams that have had success when travelling in 2023 include:
- Baltimore Ravens (12-3) - 7-1 on the road
- Detroit Lions (11-4) - 6-2 on the road
- San Francisco 49ers (11-4) - 6-2 on the road
- Philadelphia Eagles (11-4) - 5-3 on the road
- Kansas City Chiefs (9-6) - 5-2 on the road
- Jacksonville Jaguars (8-7) - 5-2 on the road
It's not as though the Rams are inept on the road. at 3-4, the Rams have been as successful when playing out of suitcases as the Cleveland Browns (10-5) and the Buffalo Bills (9-6). Of course, that is where the similarities end.
On the road again
The Rams must compete on the road for the final two games against the New York Giants (5-10) and the San Francisco 49ers (11-4) to close out the 2023 NFL season. Since the BYE, the Rams have played just two games on the road.
Since the Rams competed on Thursday Night Football in Week 16, the Rams were able to decompress and enjoy a mini-BYE week before competing in Week 17. That could prove to be a huge benefit, as the Rams must face the Giants on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2023, at 10:00 am PT. The Giants are 3-3 at home, and could be dangerous as the team was just eliminated by the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 16 for the playoffs.
The San Francisco 49ers are the last team to face the Rams this season. Some believe that their Week 16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens ensures that the 49ers will play their starters in Week 18. So be it. The 49ers were never about to sit starters when facing the Rams. The first game between these two teams was decided by a single score. And the Rams did not yet have RB Kyren Williams on track in that game.
The LA Rams have been one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now. Let's not worry about who the Rams face, or where. Let's allow their fans to worry about facing the Rams.
