The LA Rams cleared the NFL roster cuts deadline, but the front office's gears are still whirring like crazy. Not only is the team working on assembling their 16-man practice squad, but the team is still working on tweaking the initial Rams roster. The Rams are reportedly in the process of adding former Dallas Cowboys / Miami Dolphins veteran NT Neville Gallimore, which will force the team to release a player.
So while there are at it, the Rams might as well make it a two-fer special. Well, don't look now, but thanks to a shrewd NFL Waiver claim, the team will be adding two new faces to this roster it seems. The Rams roster has been quite deep, but as is often the case, either players do not work out for their roles, the coaching staff changes and a new role design takes over, or the player simply failed to achieve their expected performance targets. But they do fit the intentions of another NFL team.
So what's behind NFL Waiver Wire Number 1, Johnny?
Who were the Rams awarded via NFL waiver claims?
If you disagree that the Rams offense has a rather strict type of running back, I point you to the latest actions of the team so far. The team released the rather productive veteran RB Boston Scott (5-foot-6, 203 pounds, and the promising upside of second-year running back Zach Evans (5-foot-11, 202 pounds) . So who did the Rams keep?
- RB Kyren Williams - 5-foot-9, 202 pounds
- RB Blake Corum - 5-foot-8, 210 pounds
- RB Ronnie Rivers, 5-foot-9, 192 pounds
- NFL Waivers - RB Cody Schrader, 5-foot-9, 214 pounds
Notice the similarities? The team seems to be fixated on a runner who stands 68 to 69 inches in height, and with the exception of Ronnie Rivers, weighs at least 200 pounds. Of course, this addition could simply be for the special teams contribution of Schrader:
So who goes when Schrader is onboarded? I cannot see the team keeping four running backs, so the most likely player to be released is Ronnie Rivers. If the team has regretted naming Kyren Williams as the team's punt returner, then the arrival of Schrader does open the field to more options.
So what should Rams fans expect from Cody Schrader? In a quick summary, he has a very similar running style and mindset as that of rookie RB Blake Corum. He is a smallish compact runner who has tremendous balance and the ferocity of a pitbull. He has great running skills, but is very dangerous as a receiver as well. He will fit the Rams offense nicely.
Who did Rams lose to waiver claims?
IOL Zachary Thomas, one of the clear studs of the Rams preseason offensive line buttress, was picked up on waivers by the New England Patriots. Thomas was one of the Rams three outstanding backup offensive linemen who appeared to create an impenetrable offensive line throughout preseason. While he played left guard, the Rams also got phenomenal production out of rookie center Beaux Limmer and RG Logan Bruss.
Thomas is ready to compete for a starting role now. Unfortunately, there are no such opportunities for him on the Rams roster right now. He will certainly get a close look by the New England Patriots and may earn a starting role there. There was little chance that after his outstanding preseason performance, all other 31 NFL teams would look elsewhere.
The Rams have to find room for two new players, as well as form their 16-man practice squad. Stay tuned.
And as always, thanks for reading.
