The LA Rams must pull the plug on the brief Stetson Bennett experiment

The game-winning touchdown was nice, but let's be real here.

The Los Angeles Rams gave second-year quarterback Stetson Bennett the entire game in their one-point preseason victory versus the Dallas Cowboys, but it might be time to pull the plug on this experiment. He just does not have it, and one game-winning touchdown after four brutal interceptions does not change things for me, personally.

The Rams are poised to have Jimmy Garoppolo serve as their QB2 for the 2024 NFL Season, but that is obviously after he serves his brief suspension. I guess the idea here is that the Rams could try and work with and develop Bennett behind the scenes in hopes of deploying him as the starter in 2025 or 2026 even. For the short term, the team is content with Bennett as the backup for Weeks 1 and 2. But after that? All bets are off.

Perhaps at worse, they are thinking that Bennett could be a long-term backup option. Whatever their plans were for him, they simply need to pull the plug and bring someone else in.

Bennett seems to be the third QB for the LA Rams in the 2024 NFL season, and thankfully, most teams never have to use their third-string QB. And while this position is not one they need to urgently figure out, even with the often-banged up Matthew Stafford and often-injured Jimmy Garoppolo, it can't hurt to bring in someone who is younger and has a higher ceiling.

Stetson Bennett is turning 27 years old during the 2024 NFL season and does not really possess any special qualities like being huge, athletic, or having a lively arm. The conversation after the Rams' first preseason victory should not be, "Wow, what a game by Stetson Bennett," it should be "The Rams must find a different developmental option at QB."

We all know that neither veteran QB Matthew Stafford nor QB Jimmy Garoppolo are going to be long-term options, and while it's not common for a team's third-string QB to take over as a starter, the LA Rams have to do better than Stetson Bennett.
