The odds of QB Stetson Bennett returning to LA Rams in 2023 are fading fast

While the LA Rams still believe in their rookie quarterback Stetson Bennett, the likelihood of seeing him back on the Rams 53-man roster for the 2023 NFL season is next to nothing now.

I : Where do the LA Rams go from here?

If you were concerned that the LA Rams were going to sit and ponder after their Week 9 loss, you were more likely than not to be startled by the speed at which the Rams have acted to address their quarterback position going forward.

For starters, the LA Rams will sign veteran quarterback Carson Wentz to serve in the backup role for the LA Rams for the duration of the 2023 NFL season. While terms of that signing have yet to be released, we do know that the Rams are confident in Wentz's ability to perform in the backup quarterback role. So confident that the Rams have released both Brett Rypien from the active roster and Dresser Winn from the practice squad.

I don't think that the Rams have seen the last of Rypien. If and when he clears waivers, I expect that the Rams will sign him to their practice squad.

What about Bennett?

Because the most likely window to restore Stetson Bennett will happen with three games remaining on the schedule, and the fact that he is a rookie quarterback, the Rams are undoubtedly willing to give Bennett the benefit of the doubt and wait his return for the 2024 NFL season.

With the return of football activities via OTAs and the Rams 2024 training camp, Bennett can apply everything that he has learned about the NFL and the LA Rams this season, and get a clean slate in terms of reapplying himself to compete for his spot on the Rams roster and depth chart.

That does not eliminate the Rams selection of a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. Rather, if the Rams extend QB Carson Wentz beyond 2023, that merely gives the Rams more wiggle room in terms of when they must add a rookie quarterback to the roster next year.

As to what about Bennett? Having suffered his rookie season away from football is not an easy matter to overcome. While he did familiarize himself with the Rams organization, his path back to relevance in terms of his role on the Rams roster is that much more difficult to achieve. But Stetson Bennett has beaten the odds before.

Even with all of the mystery and uncertainty surrounding him now, he can still end up with a long and positive NFL career. Stay tuned . . .
