The silent surge of this rising secondary star could not happen at a better time
By Bret Stuter
While this LA Rams defense may be young and inexperienced, don't be fooled so easily. Some players have known the game of football all their lives. For some, the NFL is infused in their DNA, a legacy of competitive spirit mixed with previous generations whose athleticism was ideally suited for the sport. So, it makes sense that a son of an NFL All-Pro would have a strong chance of following in his father's footsteps.
When it comes to the Rams young defensive back Quentin Lake, he has doubled down on an excellent 2023 NFL season, rolling it over into an outstanding 2024 training camp. While the safety position is often viewed as the less gifted defensive back in a secondary, that is not the case in this defense. Quentin Lake, entering his third NFL season, is viewed as one of the best coverage defensive backs on the Rams roster.
And as such, he drew the short straw in his coverage assignments.:
So how did a player drafted as a safety evolve into a pass coverage specialist? You can thank his father, former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back/cornerback/safety Carnell Lake for that. You see, Carnell has been the greatest influence on his son's career choices. Well, here's what Quentin Lake had to say on the subject of his father:
This is a big year for Quentin Lake, the secondary, and the entire LA Rams football team. While this is only Lake's third season with the team, this is his first year as a full time starter. And as one of two defensive team captains, all eyes will be on him to set the tone for this defense.
In 2023, the Rams secondary struggled to create turnovers. And as the season wore on, the defense struggled to shut down opposing quarterbacks. It was apparent that the team needed help in the 2024 NFL Playoffs.
Well, help has arrived. This is a newly refurbished secondary. Veteran defensive backs fill starting roles on this defense. Now, it will be up to Quentin Lake to lead the way. Can he do it?
If Quentin Lake can cover WR Cooper Kupp throughout training camp, he can do practically anything.
