The LA Rams secondary has certainly hit home runs with the addition of free agent Kamren Curl, and rookie Kamren Kinchens. But the success at adding cornerbacks in recent NFL Drafts is up for debate, if for no other reason than the team failing to draft cornerbacks lately. Yes, the team did draft CB Tre Tomlinson on Day 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft. But he did not see much action in his rookie season and has been on Injured reserve throughout 2024.
So the team hasn't had much to write home about regarding youthful reinforcements at the cornerback position. We cited the cornerback position as an area of need in the 2025 NFL Draft early in the season, and continue to project that secondary skillset as one of the top positions on the team's draft shopping list.
The group has been inconsistent this season, making the future of the group somewhat fuzzy. That is emphasized by the fact that, unlike the safety position, many of the team's cornerbacks are veterans who have seen better days in their past. That leads many to project the Rams focusing on the cornerback prospects in 2025.
So, who are they?
ESPN Draft analyst Jordan Reid has assembled a rather thorough list of the top cornerbacks projected to be on the 2025 NFL Draft board. And so, there is an ideal supply versus demand taking shape for the Rams front office for the upcoming draft.
The depth at cornerback could allow some top cornerbacks to fall as far as Round 3. In fact, in a recent Rams mock draft, we projected Kentucky rookie prospect Maxwell Hairston to the Rams. And that may happen.
Of course, there is still a chance that recently claimed CB Emmanuel Forbes works out and warrants consideration for a larger role (or any role for that matter) in the secondary in 2025. The team will welcome back both Derion Kendrick and Tre Tomlinson from 2024 injuries. But will they be effective in 2025?
I suspect that the team will add at least one rookie cornerback in the 2025 NFL Draft before the end of Day 2. While the timing of that addition could depend upon when the team steps up to the podium and who is on the draft board when that happens, the quality of the cornerback position is such that the Rams should have several plug-and-play rookie options during the 2025 NFL Draft.
