Promising Rams rookie must suddenly overcome a disappointing setback

Former Fresno State cornerback Al'zillion Hamilton had hoped to compete for a depth role when he signed with the Los Angeles Rams after the 2026 draft. Unfortunately, he will need to push the pause button on those aspirations, as he finds himself on the PUP list as training camp gets underway.

Getting injured is never a positive event. Never getting a chance to compete in training camp is about as low as it gets for an undrafted rookie. And at the cornerback position, where communication and chemistry are paramount, missing out is a huge setback.

Golden opportunities rarely present themselves in the NFL, but the combination of Hamilton's ball-hawking abilities with the open competition for depth behind starters Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson created just that.

In his absence, some other candidate, such as third-year corner Cam Lampkin, may step into the role and get the reps necessary to secure a roster spot.

Al'zillion Hamilton may be down, but he's not out

While Hamilton may not be competing for reps as training camp opens, he is still a member of the roster. And history has proven that Los Angeles does not hesitate to elevate practice squad players to active duty in the secondary.

Even without showcasing his skills in the early days of training camp, Hamilton still has a shot to crack the practice squad. His absence early in camp actually could actually increase his chances. Rams coaches will want to see what he can do. Teams that may claim him off waivers won't have enough footage to do so.

It's a mildly disappointing turn of events not to see one of the more promising rookies compete. Nyzier Fourqurean and Drey Norwood remain, and while undrafted, they have a chance to move up on the depth chart.

Hamilton appeared to be the hidden gem of this rookie class. Given time, he may yet reclaim that distinction. But for now, training camp is underway, and there are plenty of young players striving to make a name for themselves.
