Monday afternoon, the Los Angeles Rams initiated shockwaves throughout the league by acquiring Cleveland Browns superstar Myles Garrett in a trade that sent away Jared Verse and multiple top draft picks. The default new leader of the defense, Garrett will join Matthew Stafford and Puka Nacua on the offense as the Rams chase another championship.
The move is one that could have long-term implications. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that the deal was done with the thought that the team would not extend many of their 2027 free agents. That group includes defensive linemen Byron Young and Kobie Turner, as well as guard Steve Avila.
And, of course, Nacua. In a pending Rams free-agent class 25 names long, the outcome of his contract situation will have the greatest impact on the long-term health of the franchise. The Rams already have some questions about the receiver room. If the $178 million remaining on Garret's deal becomes too heavy a burden on the books, there's a painful chance that Nacua will end up a casualty.
Rams may not pay Nacua in free agency after Garrett blockbuster
If the Rams eventually want to pass the torch from Matthew Stafford to Ty Simpson, it wouldn't make sense to get rid of one of the best wide receivers in football just as he enters his prime. Not only is Nacua a physical blocker and a wrecking ball after the catch, he has also become one of the best downfield playmakers in the league.
At the same time, Sean McVay's offense is a money-printing machine for receivers in general. Rather than pay Nacua, the Rams might gamble on a cheaper option. Nacua's off-field nonsense is not something general manager Les Snead would want to see from a player who could set compensation records for his position.
The Rams are operating on a year-by-year basis. Stafford's status could throw everything out of whack. Snead has also shown that he is more than willing to flip talented young players like Verse in the name of immediate upgrades. In that vein, Los Angeles could offload some of its pending free agents in order to accrue assets and avoid paying them later.
Nacua has gone from a no-brainer extension candidate to a player who may need to look for a new home base. The Rams have made no bones about it. They will sacrifice anyone not locked up in a long-term contract in pursuit of immediate returns.
