The Los Angeles Rams have publicly backed star wide receiver Puka Nacua through a string of off-field incidents. However, the club is ostensibly supporting him while exercising caution regarding his long-term future, based on some eye-opening intel from Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.

Rodrigue notes the Rams have "made it clear publicly and even more firmly behind the scenes in recent weeks" that Nacua must show better judgment ($). The two-time All-Pro is extension-eligible, though his behavior needs to improve "to earn the type of contract his league-leading play would typically merit."

Then, Rodrigue, inadvertently or not, propped the door open for the Rams to do the unthinkable: move off Nacua entirely.

NFL insider raises valid questions about Puka Nacua's future with Rams

While it's difficult to envision Nacua not being a Rams lifer, crazier things have happened. Rodrigue raises great points about how Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay has shown he's not afraid to part ways with cornerstone players. There's only one guy who's ever been considered truly off limits, and that's Aaron Donald, one of the most dominant defenders in NFL history.

"And, I'd just add this: Let's not pretend that any Rams player outside of future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald has ever been completely untouchable," Rodrigue wrote. "Since 2021, McVay has pivoted from a former franchise quarterback (Jared Goff) and a fan-favorite franchise receiver (Cooper Kupp), and the Rams even engaged briefly in trade talks about a receiver who McVay intensely pursued in free agency just one year ago (Davante Adams)."

Nacua, who has checked himself into a private facility on his own accord to address personal issues head-on, could reset the receiver market this offseason. Yet, Los Angeles understandably wants to put the non-football concerns in the rearview mirror before making a significant commitment to the 24-year-old. Otherwise, the Rams may have to re-evaluate their urgency at the position.

Keep in mind that Rodrigue covered the Rams for five seasons before stepping into her new role. She has a strong working relationship with the organization, which only adds weight to the argument presented. Of course, that's not to say a breakup with Nacua is imminent, though it seemingly can't be ruled out — for now.

Nevertheless, Nacua's well-being comes before anything, so kudos to him for seeking help. Hopefully, he's back to being the Rams' energetic, fun-loving and dominant playmaker we've all become accustomed to seeing.
