Quentin lake and Trent McDuffie give Rams an edge against Broncos' offense

The Los Angeles Rams are still fighting back from an abysmal start to the season in Australia. The image of that humiliating loss in Week 1 to the San Francisco 49ers is tough to scrub away.

But although the team is only 1-1 after two games, some of the details tell a different story. Positive trends are emerging. One so far is the strengthened secondary.

Newly acquired cornerback Trent McDuffie is proving to be better than his brochure. PFF also credits teammate Quentin Lake with five pass breakups in just two games, which would be respectable for an entire season's work. Yet he remains under the radar.

It's this pair in particular that will be crucial to the Rams' defensive efforts against the Denver Broncos.

Rams secondary will only get better from here

As Los Angeles prepares for Sunday night kickoff in Denver, one of the keys will be how the secondary handles the opposing offense.

The Broncos come in averaging 284 yards and 15 points per game and 15.0 points per game. 201.5 yards from that total come from their passing attack, while just 82.5 yards comes from running the football.

By comparison, the Rams have allowed just 167 passing yards per game, while giving up 113 on the ground and 16.5 points.

In fact, they match up surprisingly well against the Broncos, in large part because of the new and improved secondary. If LA's pass rush shows up, the former group should have an excellent game.

The Broncos haven't shown much offensive horsepower yet. The only skill player to crack 100+ yards has been wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. He's coming off a 138-yard performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2.

Still, the Rams' defensive backs are no longer slouches. With Lake and McDuffie in coverage, the Horns can be confident that the guys up front will have time to get after the quarterback. It won't take long for Aaron Donald and company to find their range.

At first glance, Week 3 might seem like a disadvantageous contest. But despite Denver's reputation, the Rams could actually field the better defense in this one, despite the absence of edge rusher Myles Garrett. That will be a storyline worth watching.
