The Los Angeles Rams didn't even wait until the start of free agency to go big-game hunting, as they managed to open the proverbial floodgates by prying top cornerback Trent McDuffie away from the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Rams agreed to acquire McDuffie from the Chiefs in exchange for the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, fifth-round and sixth-round selections in this draft, and a third-round pick in 2027. Les Snead is once again throwing caution to the wind by making a humongous trade.
The Rams were already going to head into 2026 as one of the favorites for the Super Bowl, and this move is only going to make things even more of a pressure cooker in Los Angeles. The defense will be expected to be an upper echelon after adding one of the best cornerbacks in the league.
Rams acquire CB Trent McDuffie in trade with Chiefs
McDuffie, who was an integral member of multiple championship defenses with Kansas City, was a First Team All-Pro performer in just his second season in the NFL. After a Second Team nod in 2024, McDuffie took a slight step back last season and missed four games due to injury.
McDuffie is by no means a perfect player, as his performance early in his career suggests that his effectiveness wanes when not used in the slot. However, he has shown to be elite at that one particular area, and the Rams are not going to be one to let an elite talent slip through their fingers.
Los Angeles knew they needed to make some big additions in the secondary, as Cobie Durant, Kam Curl, and seldom-used Roger McCreary are all scheduled to be unrestricted free agents. Betting big on McDuffie's ability might be a better use of assets than the NFL Draft or thin free agent pool.
The Rams also know that their time as a true contender may be limited, as league MVP Matthew Stafford is in his late 30s and may only have a couple more seasons of play left in the tank. Adding McDuffie is a win-now move that signifies this team is going all-in on their 2026 and 2027 Super Bowl runs.
Les Snead's disdain for draft picks in trade discussions helped them win a Super Bowl once before by acquiring Jalen Ramsey from the Jaguars. Perhaps Snead thinks he can catch lightning in a bottle twice by brining McDuffie to town.
