Rookie kicker Joshua Karty came through for Rams once more

When the LA Rams hosted the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3, it was rookie kicker Joshua Karty who stepped up with the game clock running out to kick the game-winning field goal. And he did, giving the Rams their first victory of 2024 with a score of 27-24.

When the Rams traveled north to face the 49ers, Karty was needed to win the game for the team once more. This time, he was not tasked with kicking the game winner as time ran out. Instead, he was tasked with kicking four of four field goals, field goals that would prove to be the only points scored by the offense all game.

He came through, hoofing all four field goals to propel the Rams to a 12-6 victory.

You've seen this data table before. Among the statistics for kickers below, you will find the rookie season of kicker that Rams fans should be quite familiar with. The only exception is Ravens veteran kicker Justin Tucker, who has been considered a gold standard for clutch kickers for years.

  • K Matt Gay FGM 27 of 35 (77.1%) | Xpt 43 of 48 (89.6%)
  • K Greg Zuerlein FGM 23 of 32 (74.2%) | Xpt 26 of 26 (100%)
  • K Joshua Karty - FGM 21 of 26 (80.8%) | Xpt 29 of 32 (90.6%)
  • 49ers K Jake Moody FGM 21 of 25 (84%) | Xpt 60 of 61 (98.4%)
  • 2024 Ravens K Justin Tucker - FGM 19 of 27 (70.4%) | Xpt 42 of 44 (95.5%)

As you can see in the data above, there is no cause for alarm over Karty's performance this season. When the game is on the line, Karty comes through. He did in Week 3, and he did once more in Week 15. The LA Rams have a three-game winning streak against the 49ers, and the most recent pair of wins is thanks to the kicking of rookie K Joshua Karty.
