The Los Angeles Rams traded multiple draft picks to acquire All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie. And there is no shortage of sites resuscitating the old 'F them picks' mantra in the immediate aftermath. But there are many reasons why this particular instance is not the same.

After all, despite the willingness to trade another first-round pick, general manager Les Snead is still armed with a very valuable Round 1 draft pick. And that is courtesy of the Atlanta Falcons. In fact, that 2025 NFL Draft trade is a topic of heated debate right now.

One NFL expert, James Palmer, blasted the Falcons and described their draft process as a mess. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20. But there was an unmistakable perception that LA won the trade instantly. Over time, that conclusion has only solidified with irrefutable evidence.

Fansided's Blogging Dirty did not hold back in their assessment of this trade. In his recent article, Jason Kandal unloads both barrels on former general manager Terry Fontenot for his part in giving LA more than enough compensation to use in acquiring Trent McDuffie.

Rams emerge ahead of the game after acquiring Trent McDuffie trade

The LA Rams traded a 2025 first and third round picks for the Atlanta Falcons 2025 second and seventh round picks, plus their 2026 first-round pick. After the Trent McDuffie trade that cost a first, fifth, sixth, and 2027 third, Les Snead remains ahead of the game.

That 13th overall pick could have netted a much heftier haul than what the Rams paid. And the presence of the Falcons' first keeps LA as a Day 1 draft participant. So even now, LA's draft stock is rather robust.

The return of veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford for his 18th season has accelerated the team's aggressiveness in the offseason. Rather than select a late first-round rookie who may or may not take the football field, the team lands an All-Pro cornerback with extensive playoff experience.

Suddenly, the secondary has the aura of solid coverage once more. And the team still has free agency and the draft on the horizon. The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue hints that Snead may continue to fixate on the secondary.

That's a good thing.

LA has more work to do. But fans have cause to celebrate. On the other hand, Falcons fans are fuming, and for good reason. They helped Los Angeles power up a shaky secondary. Meanwhile, they have to face the exodus of highly-paid backup quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Hotlanta is indeed hot right now, hot under the collar.

As always, thanks for reading.
