Rams deploying careful strategy for Matthew Stafford's training camp

After no training camp participation from quarterback Matthew Stafford last season, the Los Angeles Rams are applying a new strategy. Stafford did not take part in drills on the first day of camp, and head coach Sean McVay has said Stafford will take the practice field only on Days 2 and Day 4 in the team's four-day blocks. The reason is clear: LA wants to preserve its girl-dad quarterback for the regular season.

Stafford is getting up in years. That was obvious last year when a non-contact back injury nearly jeopardized his entire season. He miraculously returned to football activities just days before the season started. His MVP campaign proved that he doesn't need to knock off the rust like other NFL veterans.

It's not just Stafford who was impacted by his absence. Three Rams receivers, including Davante Adams, struggled with subpar catch rates. Only pass-catchers who had played with Stafford in previous seasons seemed to be immune to the lack of chemistry.

With two new rookies on the roster in the form of tight end Max Klare and wide receiver CJ Daniels, Los Angeles hopes to limit Stafford's workload to ensure that he can lay a foundation with everyone in training camp.

Only one thing is scarier to defensive coordinators than facing Stafford. And that is a Matthew Stafford with something to prove. Nobody expected much from Sir Matthew last season. So he went out and put up his best career numbers. Proving he still has it, however, hasn't kept analysts and fans from questioning how long he can continue to compete.

LA's willingness to mete out his training camp workload is the cure before symptoms show up. Managing Stafford's reps now saves his strength and resolve for game day, when they are vital to ensure success. And keeping Stafford out of the action will only fuel the competitive fire in his soul.

The 2026 season will be here before you know it. But LA is already taking calculated measures to ensure Stafford shows up for Week 1 in top form. The Rams powers-that-be have determined that a little bit of Stafford now is worth more than a lot of any other quarterback. And they're right.
