Rams fans can only wince as Willie Lampkin flies high with Eagles

Do not be overly concerned with the Los Angeles Rams' seeming lack of roster depth. The challenge with adding elite starters and returning the entire starting offense is that it offers no opportunity for younger players to crack the lineup. And that can lead to difficult roster decisions.

One such past decision that many fans view as an outright mistake was the loss of promising undrafted rookie Willie Lampkin to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025. Despite his impressive footage, only LA was willing to offer a 90-man roster spot to the sub-six-foot guard out of college.

When Lampkin failed to survive roster cutdowns, the Eagles claimed him off waivers. Lampkin had endeared himself to Rams fans for his ferociousness and solid performance; many were upset to see him go. The latest update from Eagles camp - Lampkin's promotion to the second-team offense - won't sit well at all.

Rams offensive line has been poached multiple times in recent years

It was clear a year ago in Rams training camp that Lampkin was destined to be something special. Fans second-guessed the decision to cut him in hopes of re-signing him to the practice squad. And Lampkin is not the first intriguing Rams lineman to be claimed off the waiver wire.

In 2024, the Patriots claimed promising young offensive lineman Zachary Thomas. While he did not remain with the Patriots, Thomas' stock was certainly trending up for Los Angeles.

The Rams have been fortunate not to lose others. Lampkin was poached by Philly, but they managed to retain other attractive depth pieces like David Quessenberry, Justin Dedich, and Wyatt Bowles.

Nobody is even mildly surprised that Lampkin is earning a well-deserved promotion in Philadelphia. Rams fans are happy for him. Given LA's current depth questions on the offensive front, losing Lampkin also stings. The team could certainly use him right about now.

Perhaps fans can find some solace in that the roster still has other prospects in the queue, including rookie tackle Keagen Trost, who will have their own chance to grow.
