The future of the Los Angeles Rams would be much simpler to predict if the prognosticator knew with any degree of certainty how long quarterback Matthew Stafford would continue to play. But that matter has become a bit convoluted.
Despite contract terms that run on for years, both the team and the player are content to maintain a year-by-year relationship. As long as Stafford wants to play, LA eagerly retains the right to have him.
During negotiations for Stafford's most recent extension, head coach Sean McVay weighed in on Stafford and the unsettled position Los Angeles faces with their 38-year-old quarterback, saying, "It wouldn't shock me if he played more than one year."
Stafford may decide to play through 2027. He may opt to play past age 40. The Horns would be willing to reserve his spot. But when he chooses to walk away, the team must be prepared to see that future through as well.
Success is more dangerous for Matthew Stafford's future with LA Rams
Even as Stafford's future remains uncertain, success ironically creates a greater risk of ending his career sooner rather than later. If the goal is to secure his legacy, one more Super Bowl victory all but guarantees his induction into the Hall of Fame.
And fans know it.
The Rams gutted the roster after a humbling 2022 season. In its wake, LA retained three elite players: Defensive tackle Aaron Donald, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, and Stafford.
Donald retired after his passion waned. Kupp was released after injuries made him undependable. Now the team is on a year-by-year basis with Stafford. This is the same Stafford whose back injury last season prevented him from participating in any football-related activities until just days before the start of the regular season.
Whatever he has left in his tank is a gift. In view of his unstable future, all those critiques and protests over the Rams drafting Ty Simpson don't hold up very well. Most of the logic for the criticism was based on faulty presumptions and speculation, anyway.
Stafford may lead the team to another Super Bowl victory and retire. He may struggle with an unfortunate injury in 2026 and retire then, too. Stafford may simply choose to retire because he no longer wishes to place his body through another NFL season. He has earned the right to do so.
Fans have every right to have questions about Stafford's future. No quarterback in the NFL could step smoothly into his shoes. But until the need for a successor arises, fans can count on Stafford to continue leading the Rams offense to great heights - for 2026, at least.
As always, thanks so much for reading.
