It's almost certain that rookie quarterback Ty Simpson will headline the 2026 Los Angeles Rams preseason. For that matter, the entire 2026 draft class will likely see most of its action in those two or three games.

Rookies need experience. And in the Rams' development plan, preseason games are the primary source for youngsters to load up on snaps and reps. Unlike many teams that use the preseason as a way to knock the rust off veterans, Los Angeles reserves it for players on the bubble.

To that point, it's easy to overemphasize who plays; it's not a roster endorsement. If anything, it's the opposite. Neither Matthew Stafford nor Stetson Bennett will likely see action in the preseason. The Rams apply the no-preseason rule for all starters and even some primary rotational players.

Future Rams offense will get its moment on stage

It's that promise of catching rookies in action that makes Rams preseason so popular. That trend will be particularly true in 2026, as the team will have plenty of future playmakers to feature.

Not only will Simpson get reps, he will be creating chemistry with teammates like wide receiver CJ Daniels, tight end Max Klare, and running back Jarquez Hunter, a 2025 fourth-rounder.

The fascinating aspect for fans is that the Rams' top preseason performers often end up contributing late in the year. Sophomore receivers Jordan Whittington and Xavier Smith and rookie Konata Mumpfield stole the show last August.

While none won a starting role, all three made plays at various points during the year in the Rams' high-octane offense. Smith and Mumpfield, in particular, became more involved near season's end with veteran Davante Adams sidelined by hamstring issues.

The Horns are not in the habit of drafting early, so coaching up late-round rookies is something they have had to perfect over time. Simpson is LA's lone 2026 first-rounder. Fans who rightfully want to see what the fuss is all about will have their chance soon enough.

As always, thanks for reading.
