Rams interest in rookie quarterback prospect has the makings of a red-herring

Rams GM Les Snead is too shrewd to let everyone know who he wants in the 2026 NFL Draft, isn't he?

One of the ominous concerns that continues to haunt the minds of Los Angeles Rams fans is the lack of action to restock the quarterback room. Sure, veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford is coming off an MVP season, but he nearly didn't get healthy enough to suit up whatsoever. And that dynamic of worst-case vs. best-case scenarios has to be on the mind of general manager Les Snead.

Despite the lack of robust depth at the position, Los Angeles is certainly dragging its feet in sizing up new options. While Los Angeles has plenty of ammunition to address the quarterback position in the draft, the lackluster intrigue of available prospects has squelched the typical pre-draft hype associated with rookies who play that position.

To that end, LA has only been linked to one rookie quarterback prospect. LSU rookie quarterback prospect Garrett Nussmeier has shared that he is set to work out for the Horns.

Viewed as a prospect who could come off the board on Day 1 or fall to late Day 2, Nussmeier would be an instant, if not perfect, solution to LA's lingering quarterback succession woes that face the team in the post-Stafford era. But this 'leak' feels disingenuous.

Garrett Nussmeier may merely be LA Rams Plan B option

The LA Rams certainly need a rookie quarterback, and Garrett Nussmeier makes plenty of sense. But something about his workout for the team feels like a setup. The quarterback position is incredibly important, and Los Angeles has a reputation for guarding its interest in important rookies like a state secret. Would LA be so careless as to allow this workout to leak?

Nussmeier is absolutely worth consideration in the draft to be selected by LA. After all, he is a pocket passer who has enough agility to avoid sacks. He does not shy away from throwing into tight coverage. He has plenty of arm strength. And his passion is off the charts, infecting his teammates with offensive rallies when the game seems to be going the wrong way.

The thing is, ESPN NFL analyst Louis Riddick has placed Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson in LA's crosshairs, and he nailed it in 2025 when he projected Pittsburgh wide receiver Konata Mumpfield to the Horns

And there is also NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky, a former mentor to Rams quarterback Jared Goff, who loves what Simpson has put on tape in 2025. Are these two analysts on the wrong track, despite their track record of insight that aligns with LA's preferences?

Sure, Los Angeles could select Nussmeier as the right spot in the draft. But fans already know that general manager Les Snead has very specific tastes and will keep his targets close to the vest. Nussmeier could be on his radar. Or, he could be vetted as a Plan B option in case Plan A falls through.

It's up to you to decide. But keep in mind, the team is going for it in 2026, which could translate into delaying selecting a quarterback from the draft for another year.

As always, thanks for reading.
