The Los Angeles Rams have earned a reputation for restoring the luster of NFL veteran quarterback careers. If you have doubts, just follow how quarterbacks Baker Mayfield, Carson Wentz, and now Jimmy Garoppolo have reclaimed their NFL luster by pit-stopping on the Rams roster.
But with fresh NFL rumors speculating that Jimmy G. might sign with the Cardinals in free agency, the team may be back to salvaging a new veteran quarterback's career. But who?
Rams legendary quarterback Jim Everett offers a suggestion that needs to be given careful consideration. He suggests that if the Arizona Cardinals move on from quarterback Kyler Murray, Los Angeles should offer him an NFL minimum for a year. Does that make you cringe?
It shouldn't.
After all, getting a former NFL starting quarterback for a league minimum is just what this team needs to make ends meet. Let's dive a bit deeper into Everett's proposal.
Kyler Murray makes complete sense for Rams in 2026
If the Rans find themselves without a veteran backup quarterback, the draft is not a source for a replacement. As optimistic as we care to be about rookie quarterbacks on the LA Rams roster, the team won't toss an inexperienced quarterback onto the football field.
But this team can ill afford to sink precious cap dollars into a veteran backup with so many talented players seeking extensions. Murray is a great option because if he is released, he is guaranteed to be paid a massive paycheck from the Arizona Cardinals. That means LA can lure him with a league minimum.
Thats an ideal price.
Kyler Murray has to be clever with his next NFL team. Sitting on the bench in Los Angeles could do more for his career than stepping onto a football field elsewhere. Several veteran quarterbacks have benefited from springboarding their careers with a chapter in LA.
Murray may seek that restoration as well. Getting cut from the Cardinals could be quite a blow to his confidence. But whether or not he is resilient enough to take a pending release in stride, he will need to demonstrate an ability to bounce back.
He can optimize those optics in Horns.
Don't forget that LA hired Murray's former head coach, Kliff Kingsbury. Was his addition all part of some master plan?
Well, general manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay have proven to employ chesslike strategy in their decisions, so adding Kingsbury with the foreknowledge that the Cardinals might give Murray his walking papers is pure genius.
Jim Everett is tuned into that subtle yet superb strategy. And he is simply connecting the dots. Love or hate the scenario, one thing is clear. If LA is in the hunt for a veteran, Kyler Murray is certainly a solid option.
As always, thanks for reading.
