The Los Angeles Rams may have lost former offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur to become the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. But revenge is swift in the NFL, as LA head coach Sean McVay just hired the former Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury to join his coaching staff. Offensive coordinator? Perhaps.
No role has been defined yet.
Kingsbury was the offensive savant hired on as the Arizona Cardinals' head coach to coincide with drafting quarterback Kyler Murray. And it was a success initially. The Cards gradually improved over three seasons to an 11-6 record in 2021. Unfortunately, the team plummeted to a 4-13 record in 2022, ending Kingsbury's head coaching tenure.
In 2024, he helped re-engineer a Washington Commanders offense that skyrocketed to seventh best in the NFL. Unfortunately, the same offense bottomed out at 22nd place in 2025, and he was let go once more.
Now, he will bring his innovative approach to a Los Angeles Rams offense that led the NFL in 2025. Can he improve upon that?
You bet he can.
Kliff Kingsbury adds new dimensions to potent Rams offense
While his role has yet to be defined, the former foe-turned-friend adds new dimensions to the Rams potent offense. With both the Cardinals and Commanders offense, Kingsbury was a savant at engineering offenses for mobile quarterbacks. For the Cardinals, it was quarterback Kyler Murray. For the Commanders, it was quarterback Jayden Daniels.
But wait. The Rams do not have a mobile quarterback.
Well, now, isn't that an indication that the 2026 NFL season is going to be a wild one for LA fans? Buckle up, folks, as the ride is about to get underway.
On some draft big boards, as many as eight of the top ten quarterback rookie prospects are mobile or flat-out dual threat. The team has plenty of experience designing an effective offense for a pocket passer. But now, the coaching staff has one of the brightest and most effective offensive coaches at engineering an offense for a mobile QB.
Even as fans come to grips with expectations that not all players fit the Rams roster, the Kingsbury hire just opened a new world of possibilities. Stafford is returning for the 2026 NFL season. But the new coach in the building could mean that sweeping changes are coming to the quarterback position.
The upside to this hire is nearly limitless. If bringing in a former San Francisco 49ers offensive coach translated into multiple tight ends and platooning running backs, then hiring the former Cardinals head coach will certainly mean mobility at the quarterback position is back on the menu.
LA is not competing in Super Bowl LX. But with this new coaching hire, competing in Super Bowl LXI just became that much more likely.
As always, thanks for reading.
