Rams make predictable roster pruning as other shoe drops to latest trade

As soon as the Los Angeles Rams traded for Tennessee Titans cornerback Roger McCreary, the team knew that it was not finished. For starters, the team had to make a corresponding roster move to create a roster spot for the veteran cornerback. Secondly, the team had to reorder the depth chart to reflect the new rotational value of McCreary.

Both actions have now taken place.

The first move was a bit of a surprise. The team had played wide receiver Tutu Atwell in Week 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, despite suffering an injury in a Week 6 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. But he was unable to contribute, so the team assigned him to injured reserve.

The next move was also predictable. The arrival of a new cornerback gave the team justification to release recently signed cornerback Tre Brown. Brown may have initially signed on to help special teams. But he never showed up in the secondary rotation, despite injury to starter Darious Williams. And so, he was released.

GM Les Snead may not be done tinkering with Rams roster, yet

The team addressed Brown's special teams role by signing former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Scott to the practice squad. While Scott's history does not bode well for expectations of contributing on offense, he is still young. He may pan out in special teams, and there is always a chance that wide receiver coach Eric Yarber will light a fire under Scott.

But if you think that's it, you don't know general manager Les Snead very well. The team still has two open vacancies on the practice squad. While those roster spots correspond to IR-designated players Ahkello Witherspoon and now Tutu Atwell, Snead has an opportunity to restock the practice squad for the next four weeks.

There is also the likelihood of addressing other positions as well. The team still has time to weigh out its options and negotiate some deals. A roster upgrade is always on the table with Snead working the phones. And you don't need to be sitting in his office to know that is exactly what he is doing right now.

As always, thanks for reading.
