Rams' new edge-rusher duo invites tantalizing question fans can't help but ponder

The Los Angeles Rams' pass rush has big things ahead. As beloved as Jared Verse remains among fans, in the short term at least, exchanging Verse for Myles Garrett is a significant upgrade. Still seeking their first 15-sack artist since Aaron Donald set a franchise record with 20.5 in 2018, the Rams should expect that drought to be near over.

Byron Young's 12 sacks last season were the most since Donald's 12.5 in 2021, as well the first time since then that a Rams pass rusher reached double figures. Garrett made single-season history by racking up 23 sacks for the Browns.

12 plus 23 equals 35. One of this year's most exciting questions is whether Young and Garrett, the Horns' new edge-rushing duo, will match that total or even exceed it, and what the distribution of sacks will be between the two of them. 

Garrett and Young may outshine their combined 2025 production 

It is entirely possible, if not indeed expected, that Garrett's sack total takes a dip this season. His previous career high was 16. Opposing offensive lines will be more focused than ever on ensuring that, if they get beat, it's not by Garrett.

On the other hand, he had little help in Cleveland's pass rush. Sure, there are only so many sacks and pressures to be had, but the Browns' runner-up was defensive tackle Maliek Collins with 6.5.

Garrett should have a lot more pass-rush assistance in Los Angeles, not just from Young but from up-and-coming edge rusher Josaiah Stewart and, on the interior, from Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske (and possibly the aforementioned you know who). 

Young is on the upswing. Not only did he match or exceed career bests across the board last season, he should have even more opportunities with Garrett in the fold. Double-teaming Garrett leaves one less offensive lineman to handle the rest of the Rams' defensive front. 

That's good news for Young, who is also entering a contract year. The prospect of a nine-figure extension should be just a little motivating. You think?

While Garrett may not have another run at NFL history in store, he could certainly rival the Rams high-water mark set by Donald. Young was already a breakout candidate, and now his life will be that much easier playing alongside the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. 

20 sacks for Garrett, 15 for Young? Greedy as that may be, it feels like a sound starting point.
