Rams now clear suitors for Jalen Ramsey after failure to land CB early in draft

Looks like things just got interesting . . .

Before the Los Angeles Rams and Miami Dolphins entered the 2025 NFL Draft, the two teams confirmed to enter early discussions over the likelihood of trading All-Pro defensive back Jalen Ramsey back to the Rams. If you recall, after a disappointing 2022 NFL season, the team shed highly-compensated veterans. Unfortunately, Ramsey was caught up in the team's financial belt-tightening. As a result, the Rams traded him to the Miami Dolphins for the 2023 NFL season.

But the two teams have already held preliminary discussions over trading Ramsey back to the Rams. And they commited touch base after the 2025 NFL Draft. While a simple exchange between two NFL general managers, the implications of that intermission may have a bigger impact than initially thought.

The Los Angeles Rams have 10 cornerbacks on the roster. That is more than enough players to sort through in training camp. What the team needs on defense is a true physical starter who sets the pace for pass coverage. While the Rams could have found such a player early in the draft, the team's tumble to remaining picks in Rounds 6 and 7 tell the tale.

The Rams will not find a secondary upgrade in this draft.

Updated 2025 NFL Draft Pick Summary

The Rams are down to seven picks in the draft now, having traded the 127th and 190th overall picks to the Indianapolis Colts to trade up to the 117th overall pick. The Rams current draft summary is:

  • DAY 2 PICKS
  • Round 2 (46th overall) - TE Terrance Ferguson
  • Round 3 (90th overall) - OLB Josaiah Stewart
  • DAY 3 PICKS
  • Round 4 (117th overall) - RB Jaquez Hunter
  • Round 6 (195th overall) (via Steelers)
  • Round 6 (201st overall)
  • Round 6 (202nd overall) (via Bears (originally from Texans)
  • Round 7 (242nd overall)

Even if the team finds an intriguing rookie cornerback prospect in the final four picks, he faces a tremendous challenge merely to make the 53-man Rams roster. So it's unlikely that the Rams brass see their secondary upgrades remaining in the draft. That means that GM Les Snead may pivot back to the NFL trade market.

Rams DC Chris Shula is familiar with Jalen Ramsey, and the current Rams secondary needs fit Ramsey's skillset to a tee. We already hinted that Les Snead would queue up a blockbuster trade after the draft, and that rumored scenario is far more likely now.

Stay tuned. Day 3 blends into UDFA signings. The Rams are going to thrill fans for the next 72 hours. And we will be here to try to bring you every update. Thanks so much for reading.
