As the NFL investigation into allegations against Los Angeles Rams starting left tackle Alaric Jackson continues, NBC4 Los Angeles reported that all criminal charges have been dropped. The offensive lineman was arrested for possible domestic battery on June 8.
Of course, the removal of pending criminal charges is by no means a clean slate. The NFL continues to pursue its own independent investigation, and the results could still lead to disciplinary action.
While the football aspect of this story is of secondary importance, the off-field issues could create adversity the team cannot overcome given LA's brutal schedule. Then again, as training camp nears, the timing of this news could not be better for both Jackson and the Rams.
Alaric Jackson is a true difference-maker for the Rams offense
It's no understatement that the Rams offense runs much more smoothly with Jackson starting at left tackle. That point was driven home in a loss to the Atlanta Falcons late last year, a game Jackson missed while battling a medical condition that threatened his season. Thankfully, LA's medical staff was able to get things under control in time for him to play in the postseason.
LA did not act to backfill Jackson's uncertain availability. Even now, doing nothing to provide positional depth could imply a level of belief that the NFL will not suspend him pending the results of the ongoing investigation. That is, of course, only speculation. If the Rams are wrong in planning on Jackson's return, general manager Les Snead will need to get busy.
And yes, some solid offensive tackle options remain unsigned.
Perhaps nothing will come of the incident from an availability standpoint, but don't get too comfortable. The NFL has yet to determine its ruling. Given the league's 2024 determination that Jackson violated its personal conduct policy, a second violation would likely carry a heavier suspension. At some point, Rams fans will know the outcome. That day is not this day.
But Los Angeles is one step closer to Jackson being on the field for the 2026 season.
As always, thanks for reading.
