The Los Angeles Rams have done no favors for quarterback coach Dave Ragone. In 2024 and 2025, he was tasked with flipping the switch on Stetson Bennett after a lost rookie season. In 2026, he has taken on the challenge of coaching up Ty Simpson and Matt Caldwell.
By all accounts, none of his pupils have been finished products. Bennett came with a surplus of experience but limited in size and skill set. Worse still, he was burned out from constantly beating expectations.
With Simpson, Ragone found a different challenge. He has a quarterback prospect with ideal skills, but little experience. Simpson can play well in the pocket but he doesn't yet possess the wisdom or confidence to know what to do in every situation.
Caldwell is an undrafted rookie who hasn't had the same opportunities as the others; he finished his college career behind Arch Manning at Texas.
Dave Ragone could be most important coach on Rams staff
And so, Coach Ragone is faced with tutoring three quarterbacks on different career tracks with completely different needs. LA needs positive growth from the room, regardless of how long Matthew Stafford decides to play. It all falls upon Ragone to deliver talented and prepared young quarterbacks to fend off such uncertainty.
The success of the QB room is vital to the Rams' future. They had one shot to land their next franchise fixture, and that was with the 13th pick in the 2026 draft - LA's highest selection since 2016 and likely the organization's highest for years to come. While many fans and NFL analysts scorned the Horns for taking Simpson, Ragone's coaching is already helping to prove them wrong.
Los Angeles has constructed its coaching staff to pave the way for quarterbacks. McVay recognized the need to pay special attention to developing young hurlers after Bennett burned out and stepped away during his rookie season. Since then, the team has made it a point of emphasis.
So far, so good. Bennett has rebounded. Simpson has exceeded expectations. Even Caldwell is filling his role well.
The Rams only get one shot to get the quarterback succession right. So far, Coach Ragone appears to have everything under control.
As always, thanks for reading.
