Rams' QB of the future is already becoming painfully obvious

Even at 37 years old, Matthew Stafford is playing some of the best football of his career. He's leading an electric offense that has the Los Angeles Rams looking like Super Bowl contenders once again. At this point in the season, the veteran quarterback isn't showing any signs of slowing down.

Still, the Rams need to start thinking about his replacement at some point. Health concerns have already started to pop up for Stafford, indicating that he may be nearing the end of his career.

Luckily, Los Angeles has two first-round picks in the upcoming draft after the trade with the Atlanta Falcons last April.

If the Horns choose to use one of them on a quarterback, Alabama's Ty Simpson is making a strong case to be their top choice.

Ty Simpson could be Rams' quarterback of the future

Before the start of the college football season, Simpson wasn't included in many first-round mock drafts or preseason top-50 big boards. He was an unknown prospect, as he had never started a game for the Crimson Tide. While he's still relatively inexperienced, the young quarterback has established himself as one of the top passers in the country.

After a difficult loss to Florida State early in the season, Simpson has been almost perfect. In the last six games, he has thrown 16 touchdowns and just one interception. In a crucial win over Missouri, he completed 74 percent of his passes and threw for three touchdowns.

Simpson isn't necessarily the prototypical quarterback prospect. He's a bit undersized at 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, and he doesn't have the elite arm strength most first-round picks possess. Instead, he wins with accuracy, timing, and an understanding of coverages that makes him look like a veteran. Watching him play, you would never know that he was a first-year starter.

The young quarterback could be a perfect fit in Sean McVay's offense. Like Stafford, Simpson is willing to throw the ball to any spot on the field and can do so with impressive accuracy. He's shown the ability to play within the timing of his offense, making him an intriguing prospect to an offensive-minded coach like McVay.

If Stafford chooses to return to the Rams after this year, Simpson could sit and learn behind him. The Alabama quarterback may be too good of a prospect for McVay and Les Snead to pass up if they get the chance to draft him.
