When it rains, it pours. That is particularly true of the Los Angeles Rams quarterback room, as fans are beginning to realize just how precariously thin the team stands on the depth chart today. New information became available today that backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who is a free agent, is pondering retirement
That would elevate out-of-favor quarterback Stetson Bennett to the backup role.
Meanwhile, general manager Les Snead has his hands full with persuading starting quarterback Matthew Stafford to show up on time for training camp. Despite the pledge to return in 2026, it was clear that Stafford would only do so with adequate financial incentives in place.
Well, the team and player are finally making some progress on that agreement.
Sources: The #Rams and MVP QB Matthew Stafford have made significant progress on a new extension that should put Stafford in the building for the 2026 offseason.

Cause for celebration? Perhaps. But earmarking more funds to keep Stafford in place means less cash to retain other vital contributors.
It's not that Stafford is undeserving. He is. But general manager Les Snead faces nearly two dozen deserving players facing expiring contracts. Some will get paid. Many will not.
Tremors in QB room are just starting for LA Rams
Getting the 2025 NFL MVP back for another season is a top priority for the LA Rams. But let's be clear. Any contractual agreement reached with Matthew Stafford today only covers the 2026 NFL season. After this season, the entire quarterback room empties.
Some fans decline to look beyond 2026. Unfortunately, Snead does not have that luxury. The team's quarterback succession planning is critical. Today, there is no tangible evidence that a succession plan even exists. That's alarming, considering how close this team has come to winning it all over the past two seasons.
Les Snead will come through. He always does. Necessity is the mother of invention, and the team needs a quarterback for 2027. Will that be a veteran or a rookie? Perhaps it will be both. For now, fans should brace for changes on the horizon. The quarterback room is the epicenter of landscape-changing tremors.
And the aftershocks may change everything fans know about this team.
As always, thanks for reading.
