The Los Angeles Rams must ready for another test. This time, the they take on the double-barreled challenge of a joint practice with the New Orleans Saints, followed by their second preseason game. While it's only preseason, there are still plenty of lingering questions surrounding the roster.
As the Rams approach a tough regular season, both Myles Garrett and Puka Nacua have been limited lately by injury issues. The joint practice will be scripted for backups at both positions.
Edge rusher Josaiah Stewart has been pushing hard for more playing time this season.
Wide receiver Xavier Smith hopes to build on his preseason debut. He could join teammates Jordan Whittington and Konata Mumpfield in working against the Saints' secondary. While all three are due to make the active roster, the amount of work each player gets this season could hinge on how they perform during the rest of the month.
Rams starters will hope to shine in final joint practice of preseason
After meeting the Cowboys in a joint session and facing off with the Chiefs in the preseason opener, Los Angeles must pivot to focus on New Orleans. The practice will occur on Thursday, August 20. The game is on Saturday, August 22, at 1:00 PM PT.
LA has adopted a dual-track method for getting players ready for the season. Starters and key rotational players are limited to scripted plays in joint practices. Bubble players and rookies see action in preseason games. This week will be the only time both groups face the same team.
So far, the defense has shown up. The offense initially struggled a bit against Dallas, but eventually shook off its slumber to show up strong.
Meanwhile, fans will have a chance to take note of who does and doesn't play in the second preseason game. The Horns tipped their hand by sitting defensive lineman Tyler Davis, linebackers Shaun Dolac and Grant Stuard, and running back Ronnie Rivers in the first preseason game.
If those same players sit out again, it's almost certain that they have made the roster.
Meanwhile, backup offensive linemen were outstanding against the Chiefs. That work led to starring performances by quarterback Ty Simpson, running back Dean Conners, and tight end Max Klare. Can they follow up that early success with a second round of brow-raising play?
More football is always welcome. But as the Saints come marching in, fans will hope to get a clearer view of who will make the Yellow and Blue worth watching this season.
As always, thanks for reading.
