There is no question that the success or failure of the Los Angeles Rams' 2026 season runs through quarterback Matthew Stafford. It's also quite clear that Stafford's success depends on the offensive line. So, why has it been talked about so little?
On one hand, little has changed from 2025. On the other, nobody knows what to expect in the future. This group surpassed everyone's expectations last season, and LA is prepared to run it back in 2026 with the same cast of characters. Beyond that, nothing is certain. Four of the five presumed starters are entering their final seasons under contract.
The team also faces uncertainty regarding left tackle Alaric Jackson, who could still receive a suspension. That foggy future could spring general manager Les Snead into action once more. Or it could simply create an opportunity to see what rookie tackle Keagen Trost can do.
It's a difficult chapter for the Rams' offensive line. To compensate, the team has brought on former center Brian Allen to the coaching staff. So, what does Coach Allen offer?
Coach Brian Allen brings rugged grit to an already physical line
What makes Allen an ideal coach for the team? Well, it's no secret that his career was hampered by a devastating ACL injury that required more than a year to recover from. And that recovery was plagued by pain, doubt, and self-reflection. None of it prevented Allen from returning as a Rams starter.
Now, that journey becomes the foundation to coach young players through their own struggles.
1. Rugged grit is Brian Allen's trademark
Allen is no stranger to adversity. He wrestled with his demons head-on, and while he is no longer playing, his passion is as strong as ever. Allen's trademark is grit, and it shone through in his resilient return from injury. It's that grit that would benefit backup linemen like Beaux Limmer, Dylan McMahon, and AJ Arcuri.
The right guy for the job, indeed.
2. Rams' offensive-line depth must be ready to start
There is no doubt that Los Angeles needs a robust offensive line after facing multiple injuries or suspensions in recent years. It's hardly a baseless claim to admit that depth players must be ready to start at a moment's notice.
17 games can take its toll on starters, particularly those who are banging bodies on every offensive snap. Over time, bumps and bruises, strains and sprains need time to heal. Allen knows that firsthand and will ensure everyone is ready to go.
3. Multiple Rams linemen have yet to tap their true potential
Perhaps the most difficult task of any coach is to help non-starters to realize their true potential. After all, a young bench player who never sees the football field can be easily discouraged. That won't happen with Allen around.
He defied the odds to return from what seemed to be a career-ending injury. And even when his body failed to live up to the role, his heart and passion for the game never quit. He pushed himself to his limits. Now, he will turn that insatiable motivation outwards to current Rams players.
Coaching succeeds when communication flows easily both ways. Struggling youngsters will find Allen a dependable outlet. In pads and helmet himself, he was always ready to go and give his all. Adding Allen to the staff ensures that players will adopt that same outlook.
As always, thanks for reading.
